A TRIBUTE TO MY HERO AND MENTOR, HIS EXCELLENCY DR. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU

A TRIBUTE TO MY HERO AND MENTOR, HIS EXCELLENCY DR. EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU

It is with profound sorrow and immense pain that I join the Lungu family, the Patriotic Front (PF), and the entire nation in mourning the passing of our Sixth Republican President, His Excellency Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who died in South Africa.

President Lungu was not only a national leader but also a personal friend, political mentor, and father figure. His departure comes at a time when his wisdom, humility, and guidance were needed most.

I had the honour and privilege of serving closely with President Lungu during his presidency — first as Mayor of Luanshya and Chairperson of the Copperbelt Province at a tender age. My official introduction to him came through the late President Michael Chilufya Sata (MHSRIP) at Kabelenga Presidential Guest House in Ndola. President Sata, in his characteristic visionary way, said:

"This young man, Nathan Chanda, has done a lot for this party. We need to do something for him. I was supposed to appoint him as Deputy Minister, but bring him to Lusaka so we see what we can do for him."

At the time, Dr. Lungu was Minister of Justice and Defence, and also PF Secretary General.

Unfortunately, before that meeting could happen, President Sata passed on. But from that point forward, Dr. Lungu and I began working closely together. At the time, I was the Provincial Youth Chairperson for the Copperbelt, and he gave me numerous opportunities to grow, eventually appointing me as one of the youngest members of the Central Committee, a role I will always cherish.

President Lungu was an accomplished lawyer, a wise and intelligent leader, yet incredibly humble. His down-to-earth personality and listening ear endeared him to many. He led with compassion, always striving for unity and peace — values he embodied throughout his presidency.

I will always remember how he supported me. Because of my loyalty, hard work, and commitment, he became my biggest defender, counselor, and mentor — someone I confided in deeply. He wasn’t just a political leader to me; he was like a parent.

President Lungu believed in the spirit of ubuntu, in love, forgiveness, and inclusiveness — principles that guided his leadership. He often reminded us to rise above pettiness and always act in the best interest of the party, our districts, and the country.

Zambia has lost an irreplaceable statesman, unifier, and gallant leader. We owe it to his legacy to remain united and to uphold his vision of a peaceful, industrialized, and just Zambia — a country where all people, regardless of background, live in harmony under the banner of "One Zambia, One Nation."

To the First Lady Mrs. Esther Lungu, the children, and the entire Lungu family — please accept my heartfelt condolences. May God strengthen and comfort you during this dark hour.

Though words cannot express the full impact of this loss, we are thankful to God for the gift that President Edgar Chagwa Lungu was to us.

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven — a time to be born, and a time to die."

— Ecclesiastes 3:1–2

Your legacy lives on. Aluta continua.
