Preliminary Meeting Between Government and Lungu Family Takes Place in South Africa
Sandton, South Africa – June 6, 2025
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, is leading a delegation of senior Zambian government officials in South Africa to oversee the repatriation of the late Sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
In a preliminary meeting held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Sandton, Hon. Haimbe, accompanied by officials from Cabinet Office and Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Mrs. Inonge Mwenya, engaged in high-level discussions with a delegation from the Lungu family, led by Hon. Makebi Zulu.
The meeting focused on initial proposals and logistical considerations for the repatriation and state funeral of the late President. Both parties agreed that further consultations would be held to ensure that a balanced and dignified arrangement is made — one that honours family wishes, Patriotic Front (PF) party interests, and State protocols.
In a demonstration of unity and respect, Patriotic Front Secretary General, Hon. Raphael Nakacinda, has also joined the family delegation in South Africa.
Additionally, members of the Zambian community in South Africa have respectfully requested that a memorial church service be included in the official and family programmes, to be held before the body is transported back to Zambia.
Further details and the final programme will be communicated after the next round of consultations.
