The Zambian government is making a last-minute legal attempt to halt the burial of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu in South Africa, insisting that the late leader should be laid to rest in Zambia with full military honors in accordance with national law and tradition.

The move comes amidst a tense standoff between the State and Lungu’s family, who have remained firm in their decision to bury him in Johannesburg, citing personal and unresolved family concerns.

Zambia’s Attorney General, Mulilo Kabesha, has filed an urgent application in the High Court of South Africa, seeking an injunction to stop the funeral from proceeding as planned today. A court hearing has been scheduled to take place just hours before the burial ceremony, and the ruling will ultimately decide whether the burial happens today—or at all in South Africa.

The government has argued that former presidents are national assets, and that Lungu, having served at the highest level of leadership, deserves a dignified state funeral in the land he once governed.

The outcome of the court case is highly anticipated, with regional and international observers watching closely.
