In a shocking twist to the ongoing saga around the late President Edgar Lungu’s burial, former Vice President Enock Kavindele has opened up about what really happened behind closed doors during high-stakes talks in South Africa.


According to Kavindele, regional leaders reportedly suggested dropping ongoing court cases against the Lungu family in exchange for the peaceful return of Edgar Lungu’s body for burial in Zambia. But despite days of progress, the family suddenly pulled out just minutes before the remains were due to be flown home — with even the South African military ready for the handover.


“We agreed HH would receive the body. We were halfway to the airport when everything changed,” said Kavindele.


The Zambian team, which included Chief Mumbi, Patrick Kangwa, and Leslie Mbula, spent 10 days in South Africa believing they had reached consensus — only for the plan to collapse mysteriously at the last moment.


So what went wrong? Who was the Lungu family “consulting”? Why did they reject a final agreement?


Kavindele, a seasoned peace negotiator, also dismissed criticism from former leaders like Mwiimba Malama, saying those who weren’t part of the talks shouldn’t trivialize such complex diplomacy.
