Faith Musonda Sentenced After Appearing at State House in Night Dress


Prominent journalist and former ZNBC presenter, Faith Musonda, has been sentenced to one month of simple imprisonment and fined K24 for disorderly conduct after an unusual early-morning incident at Community House, the official residence of President Hakainde Hichilema.


According to court testimony, Musonda arrived at the heavily guarded residence around 00:30 hours on July 1, 2025, wearing a night gown, seeking an audience with First Lady Mutinta Hichilema over personal issues.


Magistrate Irene Wishimanga, presiding over the case, heard that Musonda, aged 45, drove to the premises in a Toyota Fortuner (BBA 8874), and had earlier been seen circling the gate around 23:00 hours. She later parked near the entrance and requested a chitenge (traditional wrapper) from a police officer, raising security concerns.


Musonda initially pleaded not guilty, but changed her plea to guilty after the court refused to adjourn the case. The prosecution had lined up six witnesses, but her legal team, led by Charles Changano, opted not to proceed with trial to avoid wasting the court’s time.


During her mitigation, Musonda admitted that she was struggling emotionally and financially due to marital disputes and unresolved property matters with her ex-husband. She revealed that her children had been sent away from school due to unpaid fees, and she was overwhelmed.


“She has learned that, even though it’s called a Community House, she cannot just go there at any time,” her lawyer said.


The magistrate considered her remorse and personal challenges but ruled that such behavior was inappropriate and posed potential security risks. Musonda had earlier been detained and initially charged with espionage, which was later reduced to idle and disorderly conduct.


She has since been fined and sentenced, bringing the dramatic episode to a close — for now.
