In 2008, Maureen Mwanawasa, widow of the late President Levy Mwanawasa, famously refused to allow the then-opposition leader Michael Sata to attend her husband’s funeral. At the time, she acted in accordance with her pain, emotions, and what she believed was the late president’s wish — and no one demanded a court explanation.
Fast forward to 2025, former First Lady Esther Lungu finds herself in a similar position after allegedly chasing President Hakainde Hichilema from her late husband Edgar Lungu’s funeral. As the widow, Esther doesn’t owe anyone — not the courts, not politicians, and certainly not foreign delegations — any justification for her decision. The funeral is a sacred and emotional family moment, not a political stage.
Unlike Sata and Mwanawasa, who reconciled before Levy’s death, HH and Edgar Lungu never made peace. There was no dialogue, no show of unity — just a cold political silence. In fact, many argue that under HH’s government, the late Edgar Lungu was neglected, humiliated, and denied medical care he was entitled to as a former Head of State. These grievances still burn in the hearts of Lungu's supporters and family.
So the question arises: why is HH mourning Lungu with such visibility now? Why is his attendance at the funeral being defended at international levels — with U.S. and U.N. diplomats reportedly raising the issue?
If EL truly made his wishes known — and those wishes included the absence of HH at his funeral — then Esther Lungu has every right to honour them. Just as Maureen Mwanawasa acted in 2008, so too does Esther in 2025.
Let’s respect the dignity of mourning. Not everything needs to be turned into a court case or diplomatic scandal. Some actions are driven by pain, truth, and personal memory — no
t politics.
At that time Micheal Sata was only an opposition leader not President,HH is the head of state(President of the republic of Zambia,so don't compare the two
