UPDATE ON E.C.L. – STATEMENT BY CIC PRESS TEAM

Lusaka, 30 July 2025 –

The Commander of the Zambia Army, Lt. Gen. Geoffrey Zyeele, has issued a firm warning to those suggesting or attempting to interfere with the burial arrangements of the late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

Speaking through the Commander-in-Chief (CIC) Press Team, Lt. Gen. Zyeele emphasized that the body of the late President remains under strict military protection and is considered the responsibility of the Zambian government.

> “They will not have even one hour of access to his body,” said Lt. Gen. Zyeele. “It is under the government, through the military. So the public should not panic or feel troubled. Anyone who wants trouble knows where Maina Soko is – we will be waiting to welcome them appropriately.”

The Army Commander further stated that the military is closely monitoring all social media activity and public commentary surrounding the matter. He assured the nation that the military remains in full control, and that order will be maintained at all times.

The Commander also warned against any attempts to bury the former Head of State outside of government-sanctioned arrangements, adding that such acts would not be tolerated.

> “We are aware of the online rantings. Let me be clear: the military will uphold the dignity, protocol, and order required during this national period of mourning.”

The CIC Press Team reiterated that the late President Edgar C. Lungu served the nation as Commander-in-Chief and deserves a burial in accordance with state and

military protocol.
