murder trial: Witness narrates discovery of body in pool of blood

TRIAL in a case four men are accused of killing Independent Broadcasting Authority director general Guntila Muleya yesterday moved to the crime scene in Njolwe area, Chongwe.

At that side, a witness, who is a caretaker at farm in the gated property, testified how he found a body of a man whose head was wounded and blood was flowing from the injuries.

The witness, General Mwewa, told a judge that the man bled and the scene was as if an animal had been slaughtered.

He was testifying in a case four men are accused of killing Mr Muleya last year in July.

The suspects are police officers-M’thusani Dokowe, Alex Zulu-both- systems engineer Samuel Dokowe and IBA accountant Francis, who are accused of killed the deceased on July 23, 2024, a day he was reported missing.

Mr Muleya was found dead in Njolwe area, Chongwe, on July 24, 2024 by a passer-by.

GPS evidence before court is that a Toyota RAV4 hired by Zulu had moved to Njolwe area where is was immobile for over 40minutes.

In his testimony, Mr Mwewa, aka Sata, said he works as a caretaker at a farm in Njolwe area, inside National Housing Empowerment Fund gated property.

He said while at the same farm on July 23, 2024, he received a phone call from his friend, George Kamboyi.

“Around 19:00 to 20:00, a friend, George, phoned me and told me that there was a car he had seen and it was not moving well. He asked if it was my boss’ vehicle.

“I told him my boss calls me before coming and he cannot come at this time. He asked me to check on the car,” Mr Mwewa said.

When he went outside, he saw the same car approaching with lights on but it then moved and turned to a road facing the bush.

“When I reached the [farm] gate, I was afraid of coming out because men on the car would see me. The cars lights were all switched off, and only small lights were flickering,” he said.

The witness said he then jumped through the farm wire farm fence and quietly went towards parked car, 30 metres closer.

“While standing in a dark place, I switched my phone torch and pointed where the car was, the occupants realized my presence and they shut the three doors to the car at the same time,” Mr Mwewa said.

He then switched off his torch and continued approaching the car, whose front left door was open.

“I walked besides the car and greeted one of the occupants in the front seat and he responded. They closed the door,” Mr Mwewa said.

He told Judge Vincent Siloka that he proceeded heading to Mr Kamboyi’s house, which is about 15 minutes’ walk from his home.

“The car went towards where George stays. I then used the next road towards George’s place but I discovered that the car had not reached there.

“When I started heading back home, I then found the same car on the cross roads, the car turned and faced where it came from.

“I passed by the side after I realized that it was the same car I had been following,” Mr Mwewa said.

He said after he walked 40metres away, the speeding car moved towards his direction.

“I fled and turned towards a road leading to our farm. The car passed me using the main road and it approached towards the entrance to National Housing,” Mr Mwewa said.

He said when he reached home, he heard gun shots fired from the same area where he saw the car heading.

The witness said the following morning around 06:00, while on his way to do some piece work, he saw a body of a person facing down, with a lot of blood flowing.

“There appeared to be a wound at the back of the head and the shoulder. I proceeded to see colleagues I work with at the site and explained to them that I found a body and there was a lot of blood and with the gunshots I had heard in the night”.

Mr Mwewa said his colleagues asked him to just continue working but his heart was not at peace.

He then phoned his employer and informed him about the body and the gunshots he had heard the previous night.

Mr Mwewa said police were informed and on arrival, they flipped the body, and found the deceased had handcuffs.

“The police officer who turned the body said the handcuffs and bullets belong to the police,” Mr Mwewa said.
