The incident occurred yesterday when a group of Lundas launched attacks on Luvales who had gathered to welcome a cyclist, Yeye, who is in the district to attend the Likumbi Lyamize Traditional Ceremony.
The attackers also ambushed a rider from the welcoming procession, assaulted him, and set his motorcycle ablaze.
In a statement, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said officers swiftly moved in to restore law and order but faced resistance from the Lundas, who used bows and arrows against them.
He said during the operation, one person, identified as Gibson Mbimbi, aged 20, of Village Mbimbi in the Lunda community and son of Headman Mbimbi, sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen from a stray bullet.
He was rushed to Zambezi District Hospital and later referred to Chitokoloki Mission Hospital.
“Violence persisted as the Lundas engaged police officers with stones, pangas, bows, and arrows,” Mr Hamoonga said.
He added that about five houses belonging to Luvales were set ablaze, while police recovered over 30 bows, arrows, and spears from the scene.
And today, August 18, 2025, the violence escalated when Lundas again attempted to attack Luvales who were leading Tundanjis.
A combined team of Zambia Police officers, reinforced by the Paramilitary Unit, intervened and restored calm.
Mr Hamoonga said in the operation, 115 suspects were apprehended, including 89 men, two boys, 20 women, and four girls.
He said a number of offensive weapons were also recovered.
Mr Hamoonga said a male suspect, identified as Chinyama Wesily, 29, was struck by a rubber bullet on his right cheek and is currently in stable condition.
He said three Zambia Police Toyota Land Cruisers also sustained damage after their tyres were punctured by planks with nails deliberately planted on the road.
Mr Hamoonga said preliminary investigations suggest the violence was deliberately instigated by some members of the Lunda community who had long planned to disrupt the Likumbi Lyamize Ceremony.
“The Zambia Police Service, working in collaboration with other security wings, remains firmly on the ground in Zambezi District to ensure that law, order, and the safety of all citizens are maintained,” Mr Hamoonga said.
